Matrix Data

Two types of basic matrices are used in the installation of Terrazzo, namely Portland cement and chemical binders. The use of color pigments in the matrix makes special design effects possible, however, with Portland cement, no more than 2 lbs. of pigment per bag should be used. Colored matrices allow the creation of unique designs and also permit the regulation of the binder color to harmonize with chip colors.

Portland Cement: Both white and gray Portland cement are used in the installation of terrazzo. The cements are identical in structural properties and both conform to A.S.T.M. Specification C-150 Type-1 Portland Cement. Since both white and gray Portland cement are manufactured in many different areas using a variety of raw materials, there may be some color variation between the various proprietary brands and sources of materials. White Portland cement is widely used in terrazzo since its color is precisely controlled and also because it combines readily with tinting pigments to provide a clear, uniform color. Gray Portland cement is less likely to provide a uniform color and although it can be tinted, does not provide the degree of clarity achieved with the white variety. Gray cement normally costs less than white cement.

Chemical Matrices: Epoxy resin Terrazzo, Polyester resin Terrazzo and Polyacrylate Terrazzo are referred to as containing special chemical matrices. The materials are usually more resistant to harsh chemicals and can be applied in a thinner cross-section than standard terrazzo. Also considered a special matrix is Conductive Terrazzo, where Epoxy and Polyester resin only can be used as the binder. Because these materials are applied in a thin section they usually utilize only chip sizes # 0 and # 1.
